What a good website actually costs in South Africa (2026)

Website quotes range from suspiciously cheap to eye-watering. Here's what you're really paying for — and what a fair 2026 price looks like for an SA small business.

Ask three web people for a quote and you'll get three wildly different numbers — R2,000, R15,000, R60,000 — for what sounds like the same thing. It's confusing, and it makes it hard to know whether you're being charged fairly or taken for a ride. The gap usually isn't greed; it's that "a website" can mean very different things. Here's how to read the numbers.

At the bottom end sit template sites and page-builder jobs — cheap, fast, and fine for a basic online business card. The catch is what you don't see: they're often slow, hard to change, and built on a platform you rent forever. If someone quotes you a few hundred rand a month with no clear end, you're not buying a website, you're leasing one. That can work — just know that's the deal.

In the middle, where most small businesses should be, is a properly built custom site: fast, mobile-first, search-ready, designed around your business rather than a template, and yours to keep. In 2026 that realistically starts around a few thousand rand for a sharp single-page site and climbs with the number of pages and features. A full multi-page business site typically lands in the mid five figures; an online store more, depending on how much it needs to do.

What pushes the price up is functionality, not decoration: online payments, custom booking or quoting tools, integrations with other systems, lots of pages, ongoing content. What shouldn't cost extra is basic quality — a site that loads fast, works on phones and is built cleanly is the floor, not a premium add-on. Be wary of anyone charging luxury prices for the fundamentals.

The most important number, though, isn't the total — it's whether it's fixed. A fair quote tells you the full price upfront, in rand, before work starts, with no hourly-rate surprises and no monthly ransom to keep your own site online. That's how we price everything: agreed before we begin, and yours completely once it's paid. Know the price, own the result — that's what a good website should cost you, in every sense.
