Do you actually own your website? A quick checklist for SA business owners

Plenty of businesses find out the hard way that they don't really control their own website. Here's how to check — and what ownership should actually look like.

Here's an uncomfortable question: if you and your web person parted ways tomorrow, could you take your website with you? For a surprising number of South African businesses, the honest answer is no — and they only discover it when they try to make a change and find every door locked.

Ownership comes down to three things: the domain, the hosting, and the code. If any of them sits in someone else's account under someone else's login, you don't fully own your site — you're renting it, often without realising it. That's fine until you want to move, redesign, or the relationship goes quiet.

Run this quick check. One: is your domain registered in your name, in an account you can log into? Two: is your hosting under your own account, or at least fully transferable to you? Three: do you have the actual files and code that make up your site, not just a login to someone's page-builder? If you answered "not sure" to any of these, it's worth sorting out now, while things are calm.

What should good ownership look like? On completion, you should receive the domain, the hosting access and a clean copy of the code — no strings, no lock-in, no monthly ransom to keep your own site online. Ongoing help should be a service you choose because it's useful, not a cage you can't leave.

We build every project this way on purpose: once the final invoice is settled, one hundred percent of the site belongs to you. It's your business, your brand, and your website should be yours too.
